Hot cocoa & drinking chocolate - indulgent and delicious
The history of the chocolate drink goes back 3000 years in history to the ancient Aztecs in Mexico. Cocoa beans were used as currency in exchange for daily produce and necessities. The cocoa beans were also used for making a nourishing cocoa drink by grinding the beans to a paste, mixing it with water and corn flour and chili spices into a thick "smoothie-like" beverage called xocōlātl - the beverage of the gods.
Cocoa beans and the inspiration of the chocolate drink were brought to Europe in the 16th century after Columbus and Cortés returned from the "New World". After the introduction of this new ingredient and addition of sweetness to it, the chocolate as we know today made its break through.
Fortunately nowadays we do not need to go sailing across the seven seas when our sweet tooth starts to crave chocolate. Chocolate and cocoa products are available in many forms today and drinking chocolate is also much more easily made today than in the aztec times.
We have a wide selection of products for making delicious hot chocolate and cocoa drinks. We have chocolate sauces, flavoured and natural cocoa powders, and flavoured syrups. If you have a milk frother or access to an espresso machine with a milk frothing function try using it to make a lovely thick and frothy hot chocolate. With a gourmet whip siphon you'll garnish the hot chocolate drink with fluffy cream.
Chocolate drinks can be enjoyed both hot and cold, but especially during cold days a warm drinking chocolate with a touch of flavoured syrup and whipped cream tastes heavenly!
So let your creativity run free and try combining different hot chocolates with flavoured syrups and sweet sauces. Find your own favourite combos!

Chocolate sauces and flavoured syrups for your hot chocolate
Hot chocolate with flavoured syrup and whipped cream
AN easy way to make hot chocolate is as mentioned to use the milk frother or steaming wand on your espresso machine. Just add chocolate sauce or cocoa powder and milk in a milk pitcher and let the hot chocolate mix and steam until frothy and hot. Add some flavoured syrup to the hot chocolate and milk mixture and steam it all together, or pour some syrup in a glass or cup and then pour over the frothy hot chocolate and stir. Garnish with whipped cream, grated chocolate, cinnamon, cocoa powder or sprinkles.
One cup:
- 1 tbsp chocolate sauce
- 1 tbsp flavoured syrup
- 1,5 - 2 dl milk
- Whipped cream as garnish

Milk frothers & milk frothing pitchers
You can also heat and froth the milk separately using an electrical milk frother, or heating the milk in a saucepan on the stove and frothing the milk with a battery driven milk frother whisk.
Put chocolate sauce or flavoured syrup in a glass and pour over the hot frothy milk, stir, garnish and enjoy!
